The towering mountains of western Guatemala are home to some of Central America's most interesting and high-quality coffees. This is undoubtedly true of coffee from the CODECH cooperative in the town of Concepción Huista. Between the high elevation, skilled processing, and rigorous quality control, these coffees pop with notes of cherry and apple and have a round, creamy body. Pronunciation: con-SEP-see-ohn haw-WEE-sta The Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Desarrollo de Concepción Huista (CODECH) was founded in 2000 to coordinate the purchase and export of coffee from small producers in the communities surrounding the town of Concepción Huista. Like many cooperatives then, the group was only exporting full shipping containers–blends of hundreds of growers’ coffees. In 2009, Atlas Coffee Importers worked with the group to implement rigorous quality control measures, separating higher-quality regional and single-farm lots to sell at a premium. We started working with CODECH the next year and have continued buying across the cooperative's quality tiers. We source higher-volume blends for our year-round products and pay premiums for exceptional single-farm lots to offer on our single-origin menu.
